In The Spotlight
written by Rick Barr

In the spotlight this week is a website that is devoted to getting more hits and making you money. We all could use a little more money in our pockets right? www.linkshare.com They will set you up with affiliate programs from Avon to Music and more. It is free to join and the affiliate programs are free too. The only drawback is the fact that you will have to put a banner on your site for each of these programs that you join. Not too bad though if you join only a few and place them on your site as advertisements under or beside your presentations.

Getting Your Site Listed
written by Rick Barr

The first thing you should know about search engines is that no two are alike. You may be in the top 50 when you search on the keyword that most describes your site, but find that you are in 200th position at another. Now there is nothing wrong with the major search engines but let's face it, they are not the easiest engines to get listed on in any kind of position that is useful.

There are plenty of other engines besides www.yahoo.com and the like. Some of them are good some aren't. Alot of it is trial and error. See which ones work best for you and make sure to keep checking back to see where your site comes up.

Free For All (FFA) sites are a good place to list but they have their drawbacks too. You have to repost often. The way that they work is on a revolving basis. The newest submissions get put on the top of the list and are slowing moved down as new submissions come in.

The key to getting these types of sites to work for you is to repost as often as you can. Some of the more popular ones will rotate your site off the list in a matter of only a few hours. Some might take a couple of days. There are a few programs out there that will submit to sites for you. All you have to do is fill out the information about your site and you and select the sites to post to. One of them is FFA Blaster. This program will submit to FFA sites. The demo or trial version will only submit to the first 85 sites in the database but you can buy the full version for $99.95. Even though the demo version will only post to the first 85 sites, you should be able to get some good mileage out of it.

You can get the FFA Blaster at www.submitad.com Another one is called Global PromoBot. In the demo version you can post to the 912 sites in the database but only 30 at a time. The log function is also disabled. You can purchase the standard version for $49.95. From there you can upgrade further, for more money of course. You can get the demo version of Global PromoBot.

Beginning HTML

The first thing you should know about HTML, if you don't already, is that it this the markup language used to make the documents and images that you see when you 'surf the web'. It is a very simple language to learn and use. Today we will go over the tags that are used in HTML. Tags are the things that tell your browser what to do with the information in the HTML document. They are used in this way: The opening tag of any HTML document is the tag. This tells the browser that everything that follows is HTML.

Now, every tag has a start and stop tag. The tag is the opening tag or the start tag. At the end of the document you need a closing, or stop tag. The stop tag for <.html> is <./html>. Notice that the only difference is the "/" is added. This is where html stops. Between the <.html> and <./html> tags are a variety of tags. Here is a list of common tags and their functions:

<.head>...<./head> Information between these tags are not seen by you the surfer, but contain all the information about what the document is all about.

This tag contains your keywords and description. *note: there are no closing tags for this one.

<.title>...<./title> This is where you put the title of your web page.

for instance, the title tag in Direct 2 U Online's site is "Direct 2 U Online: Resources and links to help you build a home-based internet business." This is what shows up at the top of your browser window when you are at their page.

<.body>...<./body> Between these tags goes everything that the browser displays.

<.h1>....<./h1> Heading tags appear in a larger font than normal text. May be bolded depending on browser. There are six levels of headings, numbered 1 through 6, 1 being larger in size. <.h1>..<./h1> to <.h6>..<./h6>

<.p>...<./p> This tag makes it possible to insert a paragraph of text and apply various formatting tags to the entire paragraph. such as: center the text on the screen or bold the paragraph.

<.p align=center>...<./p> You may add additional instructions to the tag. This will center the entire paragraph. *can also be used with heading tags ie. <.h2 align=center>

<.b>example<./b> indicates text should be bold.

<.i>example<./i> indicates text should be italics

<.big>example<./big> text should be displayed in a big font. **

<.small>example<./small> text should be displayed in small font. **

<.sub>example<./sub> indicates subscript, in smaller font if possible. **

<.sup>example<./sup> indicates superscript, in smaller font if possible. **

**available in HTML version 3.0 and higher

Next week we will cover creating lists, inserting graphics and creating hypertext links. If you have any comments or ideas for future articles please email Nicole Bibee at nbibee@seidata.com.

Notice: We had to insert a period after the less than sign to make the tags viewable by your browser. when writting your own code please do not add the period to the tags.

This Week's Download - NetCaptor 5.04
written by Rick Barr

This week we would like to let you know about a neat browser that is a shell for the Microsoft Internet Explorer. ( for those of you that use Netscape this won't work for you.) This ingenious browser gives you the ability to open links in a new window without it using up alot of memory. It also gives you the option of saving pages in what they call 'Captor groups'. These could be groups of a certain type that you would like to access at any time. It is much easier than always using the favorites option in MSIE. There are too many features to list here. Go to their website and check it out for yourself. You won't be disappointed. www.netcaptor.com.
